ever wondered… what that pink area at the corner of the eye is?

You know that small pink area you find in the inside corner of your eye, next to the nose? Ever wondered what that is?

Turns out it is the remnant of our third eyelid. No, really!

In many species, a third eyelid is useful for several possible reasons eg as a windscreen-wiper-like action, to clean the eyes sideways, to flash it as a signal, or even to cover the eye with a protective transparent lid to protect the eye from the sun or from water when swimming.

In humans, this remnant appears to be completely functionless.
