Origin of good luck “fingers crossed”

Keeping your fingers crossed can be traced back to an ancient protective device of the Christian church, resembling Christ’s cross. Symbolically it is calling on the protection of the Christian God, and is a small act of Christian worship, although it has slid into everyday life as a casual wish for good fortune.
