Equity Theory in Relationships

A vast body of research called the equity theory has shown beyond reasonable doubt that people make decisions about a potential love partner with all the reckoning that they would in buying a house or a horse. Equity theorists narrowed down “the currency which buys a good partner” to 6 categories:

  1. looks,
  2. money,
  3. prestige,
  4. intelligence,
  5. personality,
  6. character

These researchers seemed convinced of a tit for tat nature in relationships. It’s based on the idea that to form relationships, both sides have to have gifts to share. Or as equity theorists would say, currency to give.
